Top 5 Doctor Who Part-Time Companions
#5. Rita (The God Complex)
I think the only reason Rita isn’t higher on this list is because she’s newer and I haven’t had as long to become attached to her. Rita is a woman so wonderful that the minute The Doctor met her, he wanted to take her on as a companion, even if it meant firing Amy. This is because Rita would have been absolutely excellent. She kept calm in the face of danger, she thought logically, she wasn’t freaked out by aliens or scary hotels, she had medical training, and she made a really great cup of tea, even in a fake alien hotel…but she also had an overwhelming sense of humanness. When was the last time we managed to get so much character depth in so short a period? She was a fabulous companion and so very brave, but she folded when faced with her own father and the disappointment she believed she brought to him.
Even though she succumbed to the terror of her room, even though she began to Praise Him, Rita was brilliant until the very end, holding her composure until the last second. My favorite thing about Rita, though, is that she called the Doctor out on his crap. She told him straight-forward: you are not the only one who can save us, this is not up to you. She both criticized him of his god complex and became a friend to him at the same time, absolving him from some guilt over what would happen to her.
I love Rita and I was so very sad to watch her go.
The Doctor had such a companion crush on her, it was adorable.

“An ancient creature drenched in the blood of the innocent, drifting in space through an endless, shifting maze. For such a creature, death would be a gift.”
I can’t save you from this; there’s nothing I can do to stop this. I stole your childhood and now I’ve lead you by the hand to your death. But the worst thing is I knew. I knew this would happen, this is what always happens. Forget your faith in me. I took you with me because I was vain. Because I wanted to be adored. Look at you. Glorious Pond. The Girl Who Waited for me. I’m not a hero. I really am just a mad man in a box. And it’s time we saw each other as we really are. Amy Williams. It’s time to stop waiting.
- “I take it from the pathalogical compulsion to surrender, you’re from Tivoli.”
- “Yes, the most invaded planet in the Galaxy. Our anthem is called ‘Glory To -Insert Name Here-‘.
