Do you know what I love about Parks? How positive everything is. Leslie is running for city council and on any other show, they would have matched her up against a villainous, unbeatable foe, whom she would beat by some miracle and it would be a testament of good vs. evil. But not on Parks. No, Parks gives Leslie an opponent who does have an advantage over her (his dad provides half the jobs in town), but he’s also unqualified, but that doesn’t make him a villain. Bobby Newport is universally liked and is it any surprise? He’s like a little kid you just want to hug all the time. And just because you want Leslie to win doesn’t mean you have to hate Bobby Newport. You are allowed to like everybody and quite frankly I have yet to find any character I actually hated.
This is also important because it means that if we were to vote in Pawnee’s elections, we wouldn’t vote for Leslie just because we liked her or because we hated Newport, we’d vote for her because she’s the most qualified for the position. And I think that’s what Leslie would want (and also says a lot about equality, but that’s a great topic for another day).
And in addition all this, the campaign is pretty clean. In the most recent episode, Leslie tried to get ahead by attacking Newport’s campaign, but in the end, what gave her the advantage was being nice to Bobby and consoling him over the death of his father. They were behind closed doors, away from the cameras, and when she told that story about her and her mom, Leslie reached out to Bobby without any kind of personal or political agenda. And that won her Bobby’s support and some good PR, because she was nice and because Bobby is a lovable idiot nice. They don’t have to be mortal enemies. Bobby Newport asked in a press conference “can’t we all just have a good time?” and Parks seems to answer that with a resounding yes.

“I’m very angry. I’m angry that Bobby Newport would hold this town hostage and threaten to leave if you don’t give him what he wants. It’s despicable. Corporations are not allowed to dictate what a city needs. That power belongs to the people. Bobby Newport and his daddy would like you to think it belongs to them. I love this town and when you love something you don’t threaten it, you don’t punish it.You fight for it, you take care of it, you put it first. As your city councillor I’ll make sure that no one takes advantage of Pawnee. If I seem to passionate, it’s because I care.If I come on strong, it’s because I feel strongly, and if I push too hard it’s because things aren’t moving fast enough. This is my home, you are my family and I promise you,I’m not going anywhere.”
